Safe Management Hazardous Waste

Hazardous waste generated due to industrial and other activities are required to be properly disposed of, in case the same-cannot be recycled or reused. The facility for hazardous waste disposal comprise of secure landfill with or without treatment facility or may be integrated one having incineration facility as well. Disposal of hazardous wastes has to be done in a manner that does not pollute air, water and soil and does not cause any harm to human beings and habitat in the surroundings, during operative period and also after closure.

The disposal of hazardous wastes in a secured landfill facility with or without treatment, depending upon the wastes characteristics; is the technically feasible, environmentally safe and legally accepted management practice worldwide including India. The wastes disposed off in the secured landfill facility must comply with the direct disposal criteria specified by Central Pollution Control Board.

The toxic waste not complying with the norms required to undergo various pretreatment and treatment processes before disposing off the same into secured landfill facility. The hazardous wastes can therefore follow in one of the many following option groups. There are number of pretreatment and treatment processes for various types of wastes. All operations of TSDF require the authorization under the Hazardous Wastes (Management, Handling & Trans boundary Movement) Rules, 2008, as amended.

SAFE MANAGEMENT OF HAZARDOUS WASTES AT SOURCE

In order to optimize and facilitate proper operations at TSDF sites, the hazardous waste generator shall be responsible for managing hazardous wastes before sending to TSDF Facility for further treatment and disposal. Certain responsibilities are

  • waste minimization, re-use of wastes to the maximum extent,
  • waste characterization,
  • segregation of hazardous and non-hazardous wastes to reduce the quantity of waste for disposal,
  • proper handling of wastes at the source,
  • labelling and packaging of the wastes according to procedures indicated in MoEF guidelines (1992) and Chapter 6 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, as amended,
